Frozen Bananas- I’m Obsessed.

I love using bananas in my smoothies. They are nutritious, delicious and are a great non-dairy way to add thickness to your recipe without using animal products like milk or yogurt. I’ve been experimenting to try and figure out how to properly freeze bananas for use in my VitaMix. After many attempted tries, I think I finally have it. Don’t laugh- freezing a banana is harder than it sounds!

The best bananas to use are ones that are just about to turn brown. Super yellow ones don’t have enough flavor, and ones that are brown are too mushy- even when frozen (use those for your banana bread).

Then, peel the bananas, and cut them into fifths or sixths. Be consistent so you know how many pieces make up approximately one banana.

Place all of the chunks in a freezer safe, air tight container in a single layer. Place in the freezer. Try to use them within 10 – 14 days. After that, freezer burn tends to settle in!

Here are two yummy drinks that I’ve concocted over the past two days. The first one, Super-foodie, is to DIE for. It can be used in place of a large meal. It’s high in good fat, fiber, protein and calories. The second one, Papaya Joy, is very refreshing and really great for your digestive tract.

Super-Foodie:

Combine the following ingredients in your VitaMix or other high powered blender, in this order!

1 frozen banana

2 pitted dates

1/2 avocado

a handful of blueberries

1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries

1 tablespoonful peanut butter

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1 tablespoonful chia seeds

I heart superfoods!

  1. I love using frozen bananas in smoothies! Though I usually freeze them in halves, so I know how many I’m using. Funny, a friend of mine didn’t know to peel them first. It wasn’t pretty…
